But the joy is, that when I am done, I can switch the background to a complimentary, more presentable background that frames my work ready for printing or sharing with colleagues. I have created several layout grids as A3 PDFs to underpin website and mobile screen designs. But, with a bit of lateral thinking and preparation, this becomes a great way to use layout grids and replicates another quality of a physical layout pad - the ability to trace. I think the intention here is to facilitate the annotation of documents. When you create a document within the app, you can use a PDF as the page background. There is one other area in which GoodNotes excels – and again, I don’t believe the developers had me in mind when they created it. And it’s core function - drawing – is beautifully delivered through what the developers call ‘digital ink’, vector-based objects that are both scaleable and second nature if you are a regular user of Adobe Illustrator and the like. There is no UI clutter required to manage. In this context, it’s restricted tool set (a pen and a marker if you please) is a positive boon. And, it’s in this area that GoodNotes ultimately delivers for me - extending the frictionless layout-pad sketching experience I love, with digital benefits such as undo, copy and paste, selection and positioning together with the ability to draw straight lines or objects. I find sketching, doodling and ‘roughing-out’ a quick and efficient way to work through and communicate. What I found was, that when I want to come up with ideas or think through knotty UX problems, I would invariably reach for my trusty A3 layout pad, black pen and grey marker. I tried other targeted drawing apps like Procreate and Sketches, which are leaders in their field, but these are full-blown natural media art tools, and too bloated for my needs. OmniGraffle – A great diagramming app, but not fluid enough for early ideationĬoncepts – I had high hopes for this, but ultimately it was overly fussy to use Upon launch, I received my iPad Pro, with its accompanying stylus as a gift, and I duly started to try out every ‘creative’ app that I could find to see which might click with me.Ī quick look inside my ‘creative’ app folder reveals a litany of unused feature-rich software, none of which has stuck with me quite like GoodNotes.Īdobe Draw and Adobe Sketch – both don’t quite work the way I do and are constant nags requiring repeated Adobe Creative Cloud log-ins just to function Though I don’t believe it was intended for this use, so its merits in this department may well be largely overlooked. It has a feature set that I have found perfect as part of my day-to-day workflow as a UX designer.
